There’s a lot to temperament–my eldest daughter has always been extremely private; the younger one far less so. I suspect this is another chicken/egg puzzle.

He demanded lots of attention, but she found much to her dismay that with him gone, we focussed on her. She was thrilled when he came home, even though he wasn’t always nice to her, he took our focus away from her!

Neither birth position is better to me, just different. The question I like to ask is: does birth order shape one’s personality or are we born craving or rejecting parental attention?

Yes, we had a lot of fun once I noticed she was there!

I’m the baby, and the only girl–it was the prime position in my family. One of the funniest moments (at least to me, and I genuinely think to all of us) in my current family came when the girls were clamoring for us to confess which one we liked the best. My husband said, “Actually, we don’t like either one of you very much.”

And I sometimes found myself trying very hard to make things fair until somewhere along the line I realised that as life isn’t fair I was doing them a disservice by not allowing them to experience this. I still try very hard to treat them equally though.
