Such an interesting perspective, Wendy. I think America’s failure to come to terms with the legacy of slavery figures so heavily. Segregation–de facto if no longer de jure–contributes so much to our problems. Your kids are very lucky. Thanks for writing.

Race is such a loaded conversation for white parents–white priviledge, white guilt, etc. But as hard as the conversations are, they must be had. Good for you for taking a stab at a blog post on this subject. I have over the years and it becomes more and more important as black Americans seems to be target practice for white law police. I assume that all the police feel awful about it, but it is in the heat of the moment, when they must keep their cool and put away their guns. And it starts with conversations with them when they were 4.

I think we have been fortunate growing up in the East End of London which is very multicultural. For our kids it has always been the norm to mix with kids from all sorts of backgrounds. We also have a Catholic background so I think that helps us to be more tolerant. If you have that sort of upbringing and are aware of historical issues it’s easier to be able to explain things to your kids. Unfortunately some people will always see the negatives.
