Hi Wendy,
I think it’s highly dependent on location. Where I live in the Bay Area, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t support gun control, but in many states or rural areas it would be the opposite. Gun control is also the third rail in American politics. The NRA’s power is considerable in both money and messaging, and they go after politicians who dare to propose strengthening gun regulations. Most Americans do support some tighter regulations–even most NRA members do!! But the issue is not usually a top priority for those who want stricter gun controls, and it’s almost a single-minded priority for those who rail about gun rights and freedom from government intervention. We are held hostage by fanatics. Thanks for writing.

When we were living in Australia last year and people found out we are Americans, many asked about our gun problem and if we had visit the Port Arthur memorial site (which we did). Our friends there were appalled by the gun violence we have here. And I can’t understand why more Americans aren’t appalled enough to neuter the NRA
