Please! Make it stop!<\/em><\/p>\nThat\u2019s how a lot of people are feeling about the 2016 presidential election. So I had to chuckle when I saw the\u00a0novel solution to this endless and demoralizing campaign season proposed on the above\u00a0bumper sticker.<\/p>\n
Still, planetary annihilation seems a steep price to pay, especially when you consider that the race will actually end\u00a0one way or another in just a few weeks.<\/p>\n
So rather than clutching our heads and moaning, \u201cWhen will it be over?\u201d a better question is \u201cWhen it\u2019s over, how do you want things to be?\u201d<\/p>\n
For me, the choice is easy.<\/p>\n
For starters, I\u2019d like a president who actually believes that climate change is real, so will try to do something to prevent planetary annihilation. \u00a0Or not bring it about more catastrophically than even a giant meteor would:<\/p>\n
\u201cI genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 — Tony Schwartz, the repentant ghostwriter of \u00a0The Art of the Deal<\/em>, in conversation with Jane Mayer of The New Yorker<\/em><\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
On a less dire note, I\u2019d like a president with steadiness and grit.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d like a president with lifelong dedication to public service and fighting tirelessly to improve the lives of children, women, families, and ordinary Americans.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d like a president who will appoint Supreme Court justices who will uphold a woman\u2019s right to choose and overturn Citizen\u2019s United.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d like a president who will build upon and improve Obamacare so that everyone can have high-quality and affordable healthcare.<\/p>\n
I’d like a president who will make college more affordable and create good-paying jobs for the world\u00a0we live in now.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d like a president who is famous\u00a0for the ability to listen, do the homework required to understand complex issues, work collaboratively even with people whose views are different, and find solutions to vexing problems.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d like a president with experience, heart, keen intelligence, and respectability on the international stage.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d like a president who doesn\u2019t insult and mock people, incite violence and prejudice, cheat people, lie routinely, drive businesses into the ground, and require 24\/7 attention.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why I\u2019m voting for Hillary Clinton. And spending my free time volunteering<\/a> to help elect her.<\/p>\n
Sure, I\u2019m not thrilled about her hawkishness or the self-inflicted wounds we sometimes see. But even if she\u2019s not my ideal candidate, I\u2019d vote for her even if I didn\u2019t think her opponent would be an unmitigated disaster whose elevation to the highest office would reward and reinforce all that is worst in America.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, I like and admire Hillary, and think she\u2019d make an excellent president. But if you share only my misgivings about\u00a0Trump and not my enthusiasm for her, you can still vote while holding your nose.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s it. That\u2019s the choice. No third-party votes or staying home to \u201csend a message.\u201d<\/p>\n
Because that message might result in\u00a0President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
I\u2019d rather withstand\u00a0a giant meteor.<\/p>\n
