\u201cI\u2019m over my FOMO,\u201d my daughter Ally remarked.<\/p>\n

\u201cFOMO?\u201d I asked blankly. “What’s that?”<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know\u2014Fear of Missing Out. I thought I needed to move back to San Francisco as soon as possible so I could be part of the scene there. But my friends tell me it\u2019s not all it\u2019s cracked up to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ally was poised to spend another year in Spain, this time in Barcelona. Even those\u00a0creating the scene she didn\u2019t want to miss might envy Ally\u2019s soon-to-be life in the World Capital of Where It\u2019s Happening. So I didn\u2019t quite get it.<\/p>\n

Which is no surprise, really: My standard m.o.<\/em> is missing out on everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live under a rock,\u201d I frequently say by way of explanation when my friends share a juicy tidbit about a celebrity I\u2019ve never heard of, or talk about TV shows, technology, the latest books, or how the Giants are doing.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiants are baseball, 49ers are football, right?\u201d I contribute to the discussion.<\/p>\n

Trouble is, I feel bad about inhabiting\u00a0the limbo between wanting to be in the know but being too lazy or overwhelmed to get there. Not following the news as I once did may preserve my sanity, but I view it as a failure of citizenship. I know about some great TV series, but am always seasons behind on Homeland<\/em>, The Good Wife<\/em>, Justified<\/em>. (Breaking Bad<\/em>, The Wire<\/em>, and Mad Men <\/em>I\u2019ve missed out on altogether.) And don\u2019t get me started on how bad I feel about my technophobia!<\/p>\n

But\u00a0death as an exit strategy from the dismal feeling of falling farther and farther behind isn\u2019t a very appealing option either.<\/p>\n

I wish I could be more like people who have JOMO: Joy of Missing Out.<\/p>\n

Like my mother-in-law, who, when I try to explain Facebook, asks in disbelief, \u201cWhy would anyone want to do that? Why not pick up the phone?\u201d<\/p>\n

Or my daughter Emma, who is mystified by her sister\u2019s failure to see the ruination wrought by \u201cprogress,\u201d and who proudly hangs on to her flip-phone.<\/p>\n

Or my friend Sally, who has a horror of answering any<\/em> phone, and doesn\u2019t fret about her social media savvy or lack thereof. (Sally also believes that dog boutiques catering to people who buy jeweled collars signify the demise of civilization.)<\/p>\n

These wise ones\u00a0could all care less about keeping up with anything or anyone.<\/p>\n

How I envy their JOMO!<\/p>\n
